Let’s explore these causes of sore gums after flossing:

  • Gum Disease
  • Improper Flossing
  • Plaque and Tartar
  • Other Dental Health Concerns
  • Other Possible Factors

Gum Disease

Gums that bleed while brushing your teeth or flossing, or that appear red, swollen, and feel tender may have developed an infection known as periodontal disease, or gum disease. In its early stages, gum disease is known as gingivitis. Over time, without intervention, it escalates to periodontal disease and then periodontitis. For gingivitis, deep cleanings and diligent daily oral hygiene may reverse the condition. However, gum disease is chronic and can flare up at any time. More advanced cases may need surgery to remove dead or diseased gum tissue so that new, healthy tissue can grow.

About half of the population has some level of gum disease, and at Town & Country Dental, our hygienists are well versed in the latest techniques and technology for deep cleanings. We will help you gain control of your periodontal health and maintain it long term.

Improper Flossing

Gum tissue is sensitive. If you floss too aggressively, snap the floss from between teeth, or saw at the gums, you may inadvertently be harming your gums. Be gentle with the floss, slowly working up each tooth’s side all the way to the gum line, then back up. The goal of flossing is to remove plaque and hardened plaque known as tartar. These naturally occurring substances irritate gum tissue and can erode the connection between teeth and gums. Our hygienist will be happy to demonstrate the best flossing methods and suggest the right floss for you.

Plaque and Tartar

Plaque constantly forms on our teeth. It is a sticky, yellowish film that contains bacteria, saliva, and sometimes food particles. Left untouched for 48 hours, plaque calcifies, hardening into tartar (also called calculus). While plaque is easily removed by brushing and flossing, tartar requires professional cleaning for removal. Tartar buildup will irritate your gums, causing them to feel sore after flossing. Tartar and plaque promote gum disease.

Other Dental Health Concerns

Cavities, cracks, internal infections, failed dental work, and eroded gum tissue that exposes teeth roots can cause sore gums. Gum disease can erode gums, as can harsh brushing. At your six-month checkup and cleaning with Dr. Wegner, your favorite family dentist in Oak Park, IL, he’ll alert you to any oral health concerns and help you determine the best treatment plan to restore oral health and comfortable oral function.

Other Possible Factors

Hormone fluctuations during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause make a person more susceptible to gum disease. Additionally, some medical conditions and medications also affect gum health. For instance, albuterol inhalers that treat asthma can contribute to the development of gum disease. Talk to Dr. Wegner and/or your physician about sore gums. Flossing shouldn’t hurt!
